Larry:
I just returned from a great river run on the San Juan River in
southeast Utah. We traveled 84 miles on the river, starting at Tuesday noon,
and finishing on Friday noon. We went from Sand Island in Bluff, UT to Clay
hills Crossing at the east end of Lake Powell. I finally got a waterproof
digital camera, so the quality of my photos for this trip are much better than
what I have sent you in the past.
The photos don't say much about my canoeing ability, but they do
say a lot about the durability of the SOAR canoes. I am beginning to think that
it is almost impossible to puncture a SOAR canoe. I have now taken the scouts
on two trips on the San Juan River and two trips on the Green River, and have
not had any mishap of any kind with the SOAR canoes, and they have taken a lot
of abuse on those four trips, not to mention the other ocean canoeing I have
done in southern California.
The catamaran SOAR's are great for social interaction, and
virtually impossible to tip over. But not a maneuverable through tight spots,
such as Government rapid. When the BLM agent checked us in at Sand Island, she
looked at the catamarans and said "I think you might have some difficulty on
government rapid". She was right, as you will see in one of the photos!
The last 12 miles I used my Nissan 3.5 hp outboard motor. It
worked great pulling all of us through the slow part of the river. We hit a few
sandbars here and there, but the motor took the abuse.
Thank You.
